Regions & holiday destinations in India

With an area larger than Western Europe, India is not a country one can tackle in a single trip. Psychedelic colours, ever-pervading smells, raucous noise, punchy tastes, and mesmerising sights add to the sensory overload, enthralling and enchanting visitors since before the time of Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta.

There are so many wonderful holiday destinations in India awaiting to be discovered and there is no better way to explore the country’s regions than with our tailor-made holidays to India. If you plan to visit, read on to discover what’s available.

Many of our clients are repeat customers, ardent Indophiles who travel to India year after year. Each trip is a revelation, with a new facet of India that they never thought existed. The cultural diversity is mind-boggling, after all the languages of North India have more in common with European languages than the ones in South India!

Why travel with us?

At Harji’s India, we are the India travel experts, able to create tailor-made tour package holidays just for you, thanks to our supreme knowledge and team on the ground in India itself. As a result, no one knows India and its best regions for travel like we do. There is so much to uncover in this truly remarkable country, and we can’t wait to help you fall in love with it.

And yet, there is an underlying current of similarity which makes India one country. Religion and religious festivals, common cultural customs and norms, and even Bollywood movies, all play their part in uniting the country that is India.

To help plan your trips better, we have loosely divided India into five main regions. While geography is considered, the emphasis is not on geographic continuity, rather on individual interests and the ease with which travel can be arranged.

For example, if you are looking for a popular holiday destination with remarkable heritage sites, our tailor-made holidays to Rajasthan & North India might be for you. If you are seeking a location bursting with natural beauty, tea plantations, and a slower pace of life, then our tailor-made Kerala Holidays will be the perfect choice.

These are just two of the amazing options worth visiting, however. With breathtaking Himalayan holidays, Indian tiger safari holidays, and a collection of amazing less-visited regions all being an option,  there are so many experiences you can enjoy.

We invite you to come and see India for yourself with Harji’s India.

What should a first-time visitor see in India?

There are two excellent options for a first-time traveller to India.

Birds in the sky in India

Rajasthan and North India

If you are looking to see the grandeur of forts and palaces for which India is renowned, Rajasthan is a great starting point. Not only do you get to see the magnificent forts and palaces, but you can also stay in many of these - an experience unmatched anywhere else in the world.

Kerala and South India

Kerala provides a more relaxed and genteel introduction to India. The pace of life here is less hectic and visits to historic sights are interspersed with trips to spice plantations, tea gardens, small towns, and nature reserves. For those in search of the serene side of India, there is no doubt that Kerala and South India is a must-visit tourist destination.

How is the wildlife in India?

With some of the world’s most biodiverse regions and over 60,000sqm of protected forests, India is a delight for any wildlife enthusiast. On our wildlife safari holidays, you can experience India’s incredible array of flora and fauna in the nation’s finest national parks featuring dense forests, lush green meadows, and rocky hills. Admittedly, most wildlife lovers come to see the Bengal Tiger, but there is a lot more on offer, including some of the best birdlife to be seen anywhere.

Where should a repeat visitor go in India?

Road in the Himalayas

Himalaya and the Foothills

While one can visit Rajasthan and South India several times without overlaps, we highly recommend the Himalayas and its foothills for any traveller contemplating visiting India more than once. Life in the mountains has a very distinct feel and you get to witness this in places such as Ladakh, McLeod Ganj, Shimla, Darjeeling and Sikkim. The more adventurous will find trekking in the Kumaon Hills and staying in local villages a fulfilling experience.

Lesser Visited Regions

There are places in India, visited by few tourists, that provide as exciting an experience, if not more, than anywhere else in the country. The UNESCO world heritage Ajanta and Ellora caves, Sun temple of Konark in Odisha, Tawang Monastery in Arunachal Pradesh, Hornbill festival in Nagaland and the living bridges of Meghalaya all provide testimony to this.
